From your comments on the appointment of an AUT general secretary, we can expect that next time there is a vacancy for The THES editor, there will be no interviewing panel.

All those who fancy the job will have their names put to a ballot of all readers. The winner may know little about either higher education or journalism but at least will have been democratically chosen.
