The Higher Education Statistics Agency's findings for 1995/96 reveal that:

*Staff costs at higher education institutions represented 57.9 per cent of total expenditure

*There was a 26 per cent increase in the number of part-time staff

*The known inflow of staff from overseas was more than three times the known outflow
