Alexander Maxwell cites a student as committing an exam howler for confusing Pavlik Morozov, 鈥渢he Soviet youth murdered by his family after informing on his parents鈥 with 鈥渁聽Russian explorer who discovered the true meaning of Christmas鈥 (鈥Protectorate was a聽鈥榩iranha state鈥欌鈥, 18聽July).
I聽would have rewarded the student for ingenuity because G.鈥塅. Morozov (1867-1920) was a聽pioneer Russian expert in forestry, and the surname contains 鈥moroz鈥, the Russian for 鈥渇rost鈥. Ded moroz (Grandfather Frost), the equivalent of our Father Christmas, defines, if not the true, then at least a partial meaning of this festive season.
