You report, in a mix of outrage and consternation, that about 鈥溌2,000 went on 880 bottles of sparkling wine鈥 at the recent farewell party for the provost of University College London (The聽week in higher education, 19聽September). You also quote that 鈥溾榯he bottles far outnumbered the guests鈥欌. That is hardly surprising: if聽I found myself at a聽party where the main sources of refreshment were 拢2. bottles of fizz, I would soon find a聽reason not to be there, too.
