Your review of Helen Small鈥檚 The Value of the聽Humanities summarises the five main arguments made in support of the discipline (鈥Calm voice lauds humanities鈥 part in public conversation鈥, News, 26 September). One is that it plays 鈥渁 gadfly function in democracy鈥. There is also a sixth.
At my small liberal arts university, a presidential search is under way. In its notice to potential candidates, the headhunting firm notes the university鈥檚 foundation in the arts and sciences, recognises growing strengths in the 鈥減rofessional disciplines鈥 and points out that such disciplines 鈥渄raw on鈥 the arts. Indeed, 鈥渢he聽humanities and social sciences鈥re well integrated and synergistic with professional programs, offering courses in ethical practice, contemporary issues, and geopolitical contexts鈥. More handmaiden than gadfly now, it seems.
