No diatribe

In his letter 鈥End ideologues鈥 reign over imperial history鈥 (3 May), Zareer Masani accuses us of 鈥渃haracter assassination鈥. To use his words, we take strong exception to this unsubstantiated allegation. Nowhere in anything either of us has written is there an attack on anyone鈥檚 character. Nor do we convey a 鈥渂lanket condemnation of empire鈥. We have both argued repeatedly against both nostalgic defence and simple denunciation of empires.

Masani may very well disagree with us about the historical significance of current arguments over the 鈥渃ase for colonialism鈥. But we invite readers to compare the tone of his letter with that of our article 鈥Don鈥檛 mistake nostalgia about the British empire for scholarship鈥 (Opinion, 26 April), and to decide for themselves which is a 鈥渄iatribe鈥 conveying 鈥渉ysteria鈥.
