The University of Bristol鈥檚 vice-chancellor, Evelyn Welch, has defended her decision to聽mark art history essays during an聽assessment boycott 鈥 a聽move that has been criticised as聽鈥渉ighly provocative and undignified鈥.
Professor Welch, a Renaissance history expert, told 探花视频 that she will be聽marking the work of聽final-year students to聽mitigate the impact of聽the nationwide marking boycott that began on 16聽April. Bristol has confirmed that it will for those refusing to聽grade papers, a聽policy that has been criticised by聽hundreds of聽staff and students.
Confirming reports that she had recently started marking work in her discipline, Professor Welch said the university was 鈥渃ommitted to prioritising the marking of final-year students鈥 work by subject experts, hence why I聽will be marking some history of art dissertations鈥.
鈥淗aving spoken to our students, I聽know they want to graduate with a degree classification, and therefore I鈥檓 joining with non-striking staff to make this happen,鈥 added Professor Welch.

The award-winning historian, who has led Bristol since September 2022, added that the university 鈥渇ully respect[s] the rights of staff to take industrial action, and I鈥檓 hopeful a resolution can be found at a national level, but in the meantime we must minimise the impact on our students who have worked so hard to complete their degrees.鈥
The intervention is, however, likely to further strain relations between university management and staff, following months of industrial action over pay and working conditions. Staff at Bristol are due to walk out on 16聽June, targeting a university open day, while the local University and College Union (UCU) branch has enacted this summer that, they claim, will lead to聽.

John McTague, co-vice-president at the university鈥檚 UCU branch, said Professor Welch鈥檚 intervention was 鈥渁聽highly provocative and undignified move鈥 and 鈥渁聽completely unnecessary one鈥.
鈥淭here are many better and more appropriate uses for the vice-chancellor鈥檚 very costly time,鈥 added Dr McTague, a reference to
Staff have remarked that they had been 鈥渄eeply shocked鈥 by Professor Welch鈥檚 actions, he continued. 鈥淎s one member commented to me: 鈥業t鈥檚 no surprise the vice-chancellor isn鈥檛 concerned about workloads if she thinks marking dissertations is something she can do in coffee breaks between committee meetings,鈥 said Dr McTague.
鈥淚鈥檓 not convinced history of art students will be overjoyed to find that their dissertations have been marked by someone who has not taught on their programme, and who is likely to be a complete newcomer to our various marking and assessment processes,鈥 he added.

Dr McTague also criticised a 鈥減alpable lack of substantive engagement鈥 from senior university management related to both national disputes (鈥渞efusing point-blank to call for reopening of negotiations鈥) and 鈥渟imilar inertia in our local dispute over the institution鈥檚 punitive pay deductions of 50聽per cent for participation in the marking and assessment boycott鈥.
鈥淪o we are sliding apparently inexorably into widespread strike action disrupting one of the busiest university open days of the year on 16聽June,鈥 said Dr McTague.
