Support for students from the European Union to study in Britain next year will cost UK taxpayers 拢50 million, it was claimed this week. Stephen O'Brien, the Conservative higher education spokesman, said that maintenance grants would cost 拢10 million and subsidising student loans would cost a further 拢40 million. Mr O'Brien added that the Government expected a 45 per cent rise in EU students studying in the UK in future.
