In a speech this morning, the shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said that the party would consult on 鈥渁pplying different targets and controls to different kinds of immigration so we can help our universities compete in a growing global market鈥.
International students should be 鈥渋mmediately鈥 removed from the coalition鈥檚 net migration targets, she said.
The government has pledged to reduce net migration to the 鈥渢ens of thousands鈥 by next year, although the latest figures showed a shock rise to 212,000.
Ms Cooper criticised this policy which 鈥渢reats all legal immigration in the same way 鈥 be it university students or low skilled migrant workers, refugees or family members 鈥 as something bad for Britain that should be reduced.鈥

鈥淔ee paying international students at our universities 鈥 who are in the target 鈥 have fallen for the first time for 20 years, cutting the investment they bring into Britain,鈥 she said, something that was 鈥渄eeply damaging to our economy鈥.
鈥淲e want to see more fee paying university students. Higher education is one of Britain鈥檚 biggest exports worth over 拢10 billion a year. And business leaders from across the globe were educated at Britain鈥檚 universities,鈥 she added.

But Ms Cooper said Labour wanted to see 鈥渟tronger controls鈥 on short-term student visitor visas because these were being 鈥渁bused鈥.
