Cyborg don raises hopes for spinal rehab
Reading University professor Kevin Warwick has been fitted by surgeons with cyborg technology enabling his nervous system to be hooked up to a computer. It is hoped that the procedure could lead to a medical breakthrough for people paralysed by spinal cord damage.

Midlands hi-tec project bids for 拢6m
A 拢6 million hi-tech institute, pooling cutting-edge research from universities throughout the East Midlands, is on the cards. The project will be based in Leicester and co-ordinated from De Montfort University, which is bidding for 拢3 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The remaining 拢3 million will come from the East Midlands Development Agency and the private sector.

Ultimatum for 'easy' vocational awards
The government鈥檚 green paper on 14-19 education was outlined in Parliament yesterday. Junior education minister Ivan Lewis said it was time for vocational qualifications to stop being the 鈥渟econd rate easy option鈥.
