Crisis highlights 'need for science'
The countrywide foot-and-mouth crisis illustrates the importance of science in everyday life, the president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science said today. Launching National Science Week, Sir William Stewart stressed the importance of scientists anticipating problems.

Government details access spending
The government has released details of how the 拢172 million allocated last November to widen access will be spent over the next three years. Further education will receive 拢20 million in 2002-03 and 拢46 million in 2003-04. Higher education will receive 拢15 million in 2002-03 and 拢41 million the year after. Adult and community learning will get 拢11 million and 拢24 million; Youth Service provision will receive 拢7 million and 拢8 million.

Homeless helped towards university
A guide to help homeless young people get into university was launched today by the Foyer Federation. About 5,000 young people a year miss the opportunity and require more information on the obstacles, the charity reckons.

Students encouraged to be more neighbourly
A poster compaign at Edinburgh University is encouraging good relations between students and their neighbours. One urging students to remember to put their rubbish out on time features the slogan 鈥淎lways Remember the Old Bag Downstairs鈥.
