Blaze at Glasgow University investigated
An investigation is under way today into yesterday鈥檚 fire at Glasgow University, which destroyed the institution鈥檚 100-year-old botany building. The estimated 拢8 million of damage included the destruction of irreplaceable books by Charles Darwin. More than 50 firefighters took four hours to bring the blaze under control, but there were no injuries.
Online science market adds four institutions
An online life sciences marketplace founded by two Leeds University academics has signed up King鈥檚 College London, the University of Sheffield, the University of North London and Queen Mary, University of London. The institutions are expected to spend a combined 拢300 million a year on science and administrative equipment through the Science Warehouse site.
Stirling to axe Japanese studies
Stirling University鈥檚 court has approved proposals to drop Japanese studies because of financial problems. It said student numbers are small and the dropout rate high. There will be a 鈥減hased withdrawal鈥 of courses, with all current degree students able to complete an honours programme.
