As the 鈥渉ard man鈥 hero of Hollywood action films, Jason Statham has always been more of a fan favourite than a critics鈥 darling.
However, this may soon change thanks to a new academic appraisal of the British actor鈥檚 films, which will also explore his influence on popular culture and how he has helped to redefine the idea of British masculinity.
The book, which is due to be published by聽Manchester University聽Press next year, is being edited by聽Leeds Beckett University聽academics Steven Gerrard and Robert Shail.
The publication is likely to prove popular with the Stath鈥檚 fanbase, who have followed his career from the 1999 Guy Ritchie comedy聽Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels聽to the聽Transporter听补苍诲听Mechanic聽series, as well as his recent roles in聽The Expendables and 罢丑别听Fast and the Furious聽franchise. Overall, his films have grossed more than $1.5 billion (拢1.1 billion) and he will next star in聽The Meg, a $150 million blockbuster in which he will battle a giant, super-intelligent shark.

鈥淗e isn鈥檛 the best actor in the world, but he does what he does well,鈥 Dr Gerrard, from Leeds Beckett鈥檚 Northern Film School, told聽探花视频, describing Mr Statham as 鈥淏ritain鈥檚 most bankable box office star鈥.
Dr Gerrard explained that chapters will look at Mr Statham鈥檚 acting style, his performances within the action genre and his work outside cinema, including pop videos and video games. However, he is particularly keen to explore how Mr Statham 鈥 a shaven-headed ex-model and former competitive diver 鈥 has come to represent a 鈥渘ew idea of British masculinity鈥.

鈥淭he whole 鈥榩oint鈥 of the book is not just to show the changing face of British cinematic masculinity 鈥 he falls into the same category as [Michael] Caine, [Sean] Connery, Stanley Baker and Terence Stamp 鈥 but also how 鈥楽tatham鈥 has become emblematic of a new breed of film star 鈥 one that embraces cinema across a wide range of projects, but one that also uses cross-textual media in his output,鈥 said Dr Gerrard.
Dr Gerrard agreed that while Mr Statham did not have the range of many celebrated British screen actors, his talents had gone unappreciated by critics.
鈥淭his is the crux of the book 鈥 we want to showcase his versatility, his appeal and the way that he 鈥榝its鈥 into ideas of British, national, international and global appeal,鈥 said Dr Gerrard.
鈥淲e really want to celebrate Statham 鈥 it sounds a tad odd, but all the contributors recognise his limitations but celebrate them and him,鈥 he continued, saying that he 鈥済enuinely believes that Statham is a terrific screen presence, knowing and with a nod and a wink to his audience, and one that begins to open up new ideas about stardom on a global scale鈥.

Dr Gerrard added: 鈥淗ow can we not be enthused to see the mighty Jason Statham聽battle a 5-million-year-old killer shark in his next movie? We'd be mad not to.鈥
