After Russian bombs rained down on Kyiv, students and staff returned to campus 鈥 but only to join civilian resistance groups, ready to fight occupying troops in the streets of Ukraine鈥檚 capital city.
鈥淲e have today welcomed a territorial defence unit, and teachers, other members of staff, and students are participating in it,鈥 Serhiy Kvit, the newly elected rector of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) told听探花视频.
Professor Kvit, who was on his way to meet civilian defence commanders at NaUKMA鈥檚 central Kyiv campus as he spoke, described efforts by 鈥渧illagers armed with Molotov cocktails [stopping] tanks and armoured vehicles in their tracks鈥 as being 鈥渋nspiring for students and teachers鈥.

Asked if students had taken hold of weapons, or created Molotov cocktails 鈥 as chemistry students at nearby听Kyiv Polytechnic Institute听were 鈥 Professor Kvit said: 鈥淚鈥檒l see soon 鈥 the Finnish invented the Molotov cocktail so we鈥檙e now calling them 鈥楤andera smoothies鈥,鈥 he joked, after the anti-Soviet Ukrainian independence leader from the 1930s and 1940s. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know exactly who will do what but we have a lot of volunteers.鈥

Shortly before Professor Kvit spoke, several NaUKMA students had a narrow escape after a Russian bomb landed next to their dormitory on the outskirts of Kyiv but did not explode.
鈥淭here are about 25 students still there 鈥 most have gone home 鈥 but these ones are from eastern Ukraine, so it is safer for them here,鈥 he explained. 鈥淲e decided not to move them because it is impossible to travel by bus or car 鈥 they would be a moving target 鈥 and only the subway is running.鈥

The university has suspended its normal operations 鈥 while many other institutions in听eastern Ukraine have been evacuated听altogether 鈥 but classes have still been held to allow students to speak to each other.
In an earlier conversation with THE, Professor Kvit appealed to scholars and institutions overseas to support his country and 鈥渟tand up with Ukraine against Putin鈥檚 regime鈥.
He called on universities, academic institutions in Europe and around the world to make their voices heard and petition their governments to act.
鈥淵ou, our academic colleagues worldwide, can [and] should be heard with your clear and loud message of support to Ukraine.鈥

Asked this week if he was shocked by the prospect of students potentially carrying guns on campus, Professor Kvit, head of Ukraine鈥檚 quality assurance agency and previously the country鈥檚 education minister, said: 鈥淣ot really. I could imagine this situation because we are dealing with Russia 鈥 the Chechnya conflict showed us what could happen and it has given us time for preparation,鈥 he said.
鈥淭hey have lots of money from their oil resources, but we are a very united society 鈥 our people are so motivated, so I am optimistic.鈥
