Sussex students call for Sampson resignation
Sussex University professor Geoffrey Sampson is under pressure from students and some fellow lecturers to resign after publishing an article supporting racism. Professor Sampson, professor of natural language processing, has already been forced to step down as a Conservative councillor after posting an article entitled 鈥淭here鈥檚 Nothing Wrong with Racism鈥 on his personal website.
St Andrews edges nearer postgrad medicine
The Scottish Parliament鈥檚 enterprise and lifelong learning committee has approved the first stage of a draft bill to restore St Andrews University鈥檚 right to award postgraduate medical degrees. The bill will go before the Scottish Parliament in June.
Appeal for missing Leeds graduate takes to the road
A new nationwide appeal for a missing woman was being launched today on a fleet of 150 lorries. Carly Pinder, 26, a Leeds University graduate, went missing last November from her home in Sheffield and has not been in touch with her family since. The new appeal is being launched as part of National Missing Persons Awareness Day.
拢200K granted to probe virus-cancer link
Glasgow University has won 拢210,000 from the Leukaemia Research Fund to investigate the links between the Epstein-Barr virus and lymphoma blood cancers. The virus has been linked with a number of cancers, such as Hodgkin鈥檚 disease, but little is known about how it infects blood cells and can sometimes convert these to cancer cells.
Psychiatrist takes Oxford chair in autism
Oxford University has appointed a psychiatrist to a new post leading research into the causes of and potential cures for autism and related disorders. The announcement of the appointment of Anthony Bailey, of London鈥檚 Institute of Psychiatry, to the new Cheryl and Reece Scott Chair in Psychiatry coincides with National Autism Awareness Week.
