Victoria University of Wellington considers name change

New Zealand institution鈥檚 switch could end confusion with similarly named institutions around world

Victoria University of Wellington is considering changing its name, to end confusion with other similarly named universities around the world and boost its international standing.

Grant Guilford, the university鈥檚 vice-chancellor, said that international analysis had shown that the 鈥渧ery high quality鈥 of the university鈥檚 research and teaching 鈥渋sn't being as well recognised offshore as it should be鈥, the reported.

鈥淲e also know that confusion arises with our name because there are a number of other universities around the world that are similarly named,鈥 he said.

鈥淭his means the achievements of our staff and students 鈥 and for that matter our city 鈥 can be attributed to other institutions and countries, dimming our international standing.

鈥淕iven the importance of the clarity of our name, we are considering whether changes are needed.鈥

The institution was founded as Victoria College, named after Queen Victoria, in 1897.

Online rumours suggested that the university was looking to change its name to University of Wellington New Zealand: Te Herenga Waka, the Herald said.

Other similarly named institutions include Australia鈥檚 Victoria University, Canada鈥檚 University of Victoria, Uganda鈥檚 Victoria University and Bangladesh鈥檚 Victoria University.
