In his review of Playboys and Mayfair Men: Crime, Class, Masculinity, and Fascism in 1930s London, by Angus McLaren (Books, 23聽November), Clive Bloom writes that 鈥溾he Mayfair men finally atoned for their sins鈥n the cockpit of a Spitfire鈥. If that is really true, then doesn鈥檛 the winning of the Battle of Britain as a vital holding action in the eventual defeat of mid-20th century fascism mean that we owe our freedoms today, in part, to their unbridled wildness?
What then does this suggest for today鈥檚 political correctness, 鈥渟afe聽spaces鈥 and proliferating sensitivities鈥?
