Located in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, the Department of Political and Social Change (PSC) provides a dynamic and collaborative environment for research and teaching in Asian politics and society, with expertise in Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and China. PSC brings together interdisciplinary perspectives from political science, sociology, history, and anthropology, and offers staff the opportunity to engage with ambitious students, develop influential research, and contribute to understanding political and social change in Asia.

The Opportunity

The position has been established to support the Department of Political and Social Change’s teaching contribution to the Bell School’s Bachelor of Asia Pacific Affairs (BAPA). Located in the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, BAPA is an innovative undergraduate dual-degree program between ANU and Ritsumeikan University in Japan. Students study at both ANU and Ritsumeikan’s Osaka Ibaraki Campus (OIC) and are taught by academic staff from both institutions in English. On successful completion, students receive separate degrees from both institutions. The program was launched in 2019, and has a cohort of students primarily from Australia, Japan, and the Asia Pacific region. The lecturer position will teach ANU courses as part of the delivery of the BAPA program at OIC. The role is based at ANU, Australia, but it is part of the job requirement that the successful incumbent of this position will be available to teach for up to 4 months at Ritsumeikan University in Japan each year.

The successful applicant will also have a general ability to teach into undergraduate and graduate courses, contributing to PSC’s programs in political science and Asian politics, with opportunities to supervise honours and graduate research students. The role provides the chance to develop a strong research agenda aligned with PSC’s areas of specialisation, including democratisation, conflict and conflict resolution, and related fields. The successful candidate will engage with diverse student cohorts, collaborate with colleagues across disciplines, and contribute to PSC’s position as a leading centre for research and teaching on Asian politics and society.

Our Ideal Candidate.

The ideal candidate will be an early to mid-career scholar with a strong record of teaching and research in the politics and society of Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, or South Asia. They will have expertise in areas aligned with the Department’s specialisations, such as democratisation, conflict and conflict resolution, gender, or religious politics. Given the Department’s already existing profile of expertise, we particularly encourage applications from scholars who specialise in the politics and society of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, or India, or who have a comparative focus on multiple Southeast Asian, Northeast Asian, or South Asian countries. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic about engaging diverse undergraduate and graduate student cohorts, able to work collaboratively across disciplines, and committed to contributing to the Department’s teaching, research, and intellectual community. A demonstrated ability to supervise research students and to develop a strong research agenda that advances understanding of Asian politics and society is highly desirable.

As a Technician in our Mechanical Workshop you will be responsible for aiding staff and students in the manufacture of bespoke components and equipment for experimental and research purposes that will be used in all environments from beneath the oceans, cleanrooms, high voltage labs to outer space and everything in between.?

To be successful, you will be an experienced machinist having completed a recognised engineering apprenticeship with a minimum City & Guilds/ NVQ Level 3-4 in Mechanical Engineering or having proven work experience acquired in relevant technical support roles. You will be able to use your skills and experience to manufacture complex and high precision work, machining components from specialist materials using a range of conventional machine tools such as Centre Lathes and Vertical Mills. Ideally with experience of CNC machining including multi-axis CNC Mills, CNC Lathes and EDM. The ability to programme, set and operate would be highly beneficial although training could be provided for the right candidate. You will also possess excellent hand skills.

You will be an effective communicator able to explain technical issues to those less experienced and where English may be their second language. Pitching in to solve unique experimental manufacture and design solutions will be your second nature and you will always be looking to deliver results in the most efficient way and enhancing customers' experience.

You will have excellent time management skills to be able to work in a fast-paced environment. You will be used to working to tight tolerances and unaccompanied producing one off components to engineering drawings.

The program in Legal Studies was established as an interdisciplinary program at NYU Abu Dhabi in 2018. It is situated within the Social Sciences and the Arts and Humanities. The Program offers teaching towards the BA with a major or a minor in Legal Studies. The Program teaches courses mainly in the common law, but provides many opportunities to study civil law.

The major in legal studies provides for the academic study of the law in the context of a liberal arts education. We approach questions of legal doctrine against the background of broader questions of human experience. What is justice? What is Law? How is it organized? Who and what constitutes the arbiter of justice? What are the effects of historical, cultural, religious, and national settings on law and justice? What are the legal issues raised by global concerns such as those about the environment, technology, and trade? Our students combine the study of law with the study of the core curriculum but also with many optional courses they take in the humanities and the social sciences.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent degree in law or cognate fields (which includes a Juris Doctor taken in the United States and other jurisdictions that follow that model of legal education), and they must have – or have the potential to develop – a strong record of scholarship.
