Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Science, the Head of School will be responsible for:

Your personal sphere of play:

We are looking for a dynamic, diplomatic and strategic thinker at the postdoctoral level to run the new Core Facility Animal Care (AC) at the University of Vienna Biology Building (UBB). The AC is grounded on basic research on animal behavior and cognition, but aims to connect researchers from related fields of expertise within the Faculty of Life Sciences, such as developmental and evolutionary biology and neuroscience.

As senior scientist and head of the AC, you will work closely with the existing research teams, and the non-scientific staff to create a critical mass and momentum, to foster excellent, integrated and impact-focused research in a state-of-the-art facility. You will actively contribute to the integration of existing and new working groups, the coordination and mentoring of staff and trainees, and the management of AC’s budget. Your further duties include the coordination of animal welfare approvals and ethical permissions, and the maintenance of the AC in compliance with animal welfare guidelines. You will be also responsible for internal and external communication and strategically guide our disseminations and PR activities to increase visibility.

We are looking for a researcher with advanced skills in animal behavior and/or animal welfare, with experience in the organization of animal research including coordination of staff and trainees, handling of animal experimentation licenses and dissemination strategies. We would expect a dynamic, open-minded, analytical, task-focused and socially skilled person with a good understanding of leadership and communication in both English and German language.

Your future tasks:

The successful candidate is expected to head the Animal Care Facility which includes:


	coordination of staff and budget
	maintenance of the facility including animal welfare
	internal and external communication
	support of already ongoing projects of our research teams
	participation in teaching and research administration?

First Department of Surgery

First Department of Surgery is a?therapeutic, educational and research clinic of the St. Anne?s University Hospital in Brno and the Faculty of Medicine of MU. It is a?long-term provider of specialized surgical care of a?higher degree with a?comprehensive multidisciplinary background and ensured continuity of intensive and rehabilitation care. It also focuses on a?comprehensive range of surgical care in the treatment of lung, respiratory, pleural, thoracic, thoracic, esophageal, surgical treatment of liver, pancreas, gallbladder, biliary tract, surgery of the gastrointestinal tract to the full extent, including pelvic floor diseases. A?substantial part of surgical care consists of general traumatology dealing with the treatment of common and complicated skeletal fractures, including arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder joints and care for serious cavity injuries. The department offers both the possibility of surgical diagnostics and, above all, surgical treatment.

The candidate for the position of a?Department Head must be a?respected expert in the field of surgery, with experience of working in a?given field and with expertise in pre-graduate and postgraduate education.

The Head of the department will be responsible for the management of the clinic, undergraduate medical education, doctoral studies, publishing and coordination of research conducted at the clinic. The Candidate for Department Head will present his/her idea of fulfilling the above during the selection process.

About the role

Job Purpose

The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum.

Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry.

In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT.

Key Responsibilities


	Design and teach labs & practice modules.
	Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP).
	Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry.
	Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research.
	Ensure safety in labs.


Job Requirements


	A good degree in Engineering or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications will be advantageous.
	Deep technical specialist with 10 or more years of working experience in Environment, Health and Safety with relevant domain expertise and industry experience, safety processes, SOPs, risks assessment in one or more of the following areas is required:
	
		Chemical – Chemical, Process safety, proper disposal of chemicals, etc.
		Biological – Proper handling of microbes, etc.
		Electrical – Proper handling of heavy current, high voltage supply and equipment, etc
		Mechanical – Proper handling of heavy, sharp tools, operation of machinery, etc.
		Civil – Proper handling of heavy tools, samples/parts and machinery, design for safety, etc.
	
	
	Deep, hands-on competence and understanding in safety related matters.
	Have strong technical competence in safety management system, safety processes, SOPs, risks assessment, hazard identification, safety training, safety culture, regulation, etc.
	Operational Knowledge in unit operations (for e.g. Heat Exchanger, Distillation Column, Reactors, Cooling Tower etc).
	Practical knowledge of Quality Management Systems and Engineering standards including but not limited to ISO9001, OSHA and BSI etc.
	Extensive experience and knowledge of industry practices to bring industry perspective to SIT.
	Keen interest in innovation projects, with demonstrated ability in developing solutions to technical problems.
	Strong supervisory skills and enjoy working closely with students in an educational environment.
	Demonstrate proficiency to keep abreast of development in the field and pursue professional certification programs. Possess industrial certifications in relevant areas will be an added advantage.
