Established on 19 June 1963 as a branch of Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar became an independent institution in 1965. 

It is a private Islamic university guided by the Muhammadiyah values of education, social responsibility and community engagement. 

The university provides a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through seven faculties: teacher training and education, agriculture, engineering, economics, social and political sciences, Islamic studies, and medicine. Many of its programmes are accredited by the Indonesian National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT), ensuring recognised academic standards. 

The main campus on Jalan Sultan Alauddin features the 17-floor Iqra Tower, student dormitories, the Mukhtamar Muhammadiyah Convention Centre, and the Subulussalam Al Khoory Mosque. 

Facilities include modern laboratories, a central library, a medical centre, sports facilities, arts and cultural spaces, and student club areas. 

Student life is vibrant, with opportunities in sports, arts, language clubs, environmental programmes, scouting, martial arts and volunteer initiatives.
