Sorsogon State University traces its origins back to 1907, when it was first established as the Sorsogon Provincial Trade School, providing woodworking instruction to local pupils. Over time it evolved into the Sorsogon School of Arts and Trades, before transforming into Sorsogon State College in 1993, bringing together several vocational schools from across the province. In May 2021, the institution was officially granted university status, reflecting its expanded academic and research capacities.

The university today operates a multi-campus structure across Sorsogon Province, with its main site in Sorsogon City housing the Office of the President and central administration. Additional campuses in Bulan, Castilla and Magallanes deliver programmes in fields such as engineering, teacher education, business, fisheries, and agriculture, alongside specialist graduate and technical offerings. The City Campus also hosts the Laboratory High School and maintains the largest academic library in the province.

Courses span both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including professional and doctoral degrees, with strong provision for research, extension services and industry partnerships.

The university is also home to several Research and Innovation Centres, focusing on areas such as marine biodiversity and bamboo utilisation.
