The University of Zintan has a history that dates back to 1991 with the establishment of the College of Science under the University of Al Jabel Al Gharbi. It operated as part of that institution until 2017, when a national restructuring of higher education led to its independence under the name the University of Zintan.?
The university is located in Zintan, a historic city in northwestern Libya, situated in the peaks of the Nafusa Mountains around 160 kilometres southwest of Tripoli.?
The University of Zintan is organised into numerous faculties including economics and political science, education, arts, medicine, accounting, engineering, dentistry, and agricultural and vet sciences. Each faculty is divided into different departments, which offer a range of both undergraduate and graduate degree programmes.?
Outside the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in the various cultural and sporting activities held by the Activity Department of the Ministry of Higher Education. There are several clubs, societies and events for students to get involved in throughout the academic year.

About us

The Department of Informatics at King’s College London is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow to work in the area of technical AI safety.

About the role

The position is funded by the Open Philanthropy grant “Verifiably Robust Conformal Probes”. The project’s goal is to develop methods for latent probing (aka activation monitoring) of large language models (LLMs) that leverage certification and conformal prediction techniques to offer probabilistic and adversarial robustness guarantees. Applications include detection of misaligned LLM intentions such as deception, harmfulness, jailbreaking, and power-seeking behaviours.

You will work alongside Dr Nicola Paoletti and a core team that includes a PhD student from Dr Paoletti’s lab, Prof Osvaldo Simeone from the Department of Engineering at King’s College London, and Dr Mehran Hosseini from the University of Manchester. You will join a vibrant research environment, with several researchers in Dr Paoletti’s lab working on related topics, within a department that has a strong track record in AI research.

Applicants for the associate position should have already completed, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant discipline. Applicants for the fellow position should also have prior post-doc experience. Commensurate with their career stage, applicants should have an outstanding research track record in topics related to the project’s scope, such as mechanistic interpretability of LLMs, robustness verification of machine learning models, and conformal inference.

Applicants should demonstrate scientific creativity, research independence, the capacity to support junior team members, and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until 31 October 2027 and starting as soon as possible.

Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development.

As a university assistant (praedoc) on this 4-year position you will be part of the “Quantum Information and Quantum Many-Body Physics” group, led by Prof. Norbert Schuch. Our research lies at the interface of Quantum Information and Computation with the study of Complex Quantum Many-Body Systems. For this, we apply a combination of methods from both Physics and Mathematics, complemented by concepts from Theoretical Computer Science.

Our research group is located jointly at the Faculty of Physics – as part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics, and Quantum Information Group – and at the Faculty of Mathematics. Furthermore, we are a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe, and of the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA, which aims at advancing basic research in quantum sciences, expanding the frontiers of knowledge, and thus driving future innovations.

Your future tasks:

You will actively participate in research, teaching, and administration. This entails:


	You conduct research at the interface between Quantum Information and Quantum Many-Body Physics, where the focus of your research will lie on the study of topological order using tensor network methods.
	You continuously stay informed about the state of the art in your field.
	You present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis.
	You work on your dissertation project and towards its timely completion. The focus of the dissertation project will be on the application of quantum information driven tools, in particular tensor network methods, to the study of topologically ordered systems.
	You contribute to teaching, such as lab courses or exercise classes, within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.?
	You contribute to the dissemination of your results through publications and conference presentations, and engage in outreach activities aimed at the general public.
	You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching, and administration.
