More than 350 international oceanographers will meet this month to put together the first global survey of the ocean's circulation. Under the wing of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, the research teams from 30 nations have collected more data, from satellites and research ships, in the past eight years than had been collected in the past 120 years of marine science, said John Gould, head of WOCE project office at the Southampton Oceanography Centre.

The data is expected to offer an unprecedented understanding of the relationship between changes in the ocean and changes in the atmosphere.
